Mahvash & Jahangir Siddiqui Foundation supports NICH to set up a Day Care Surgery Unit & Emergency Operation Theatre

National Institute of Child Health (NICH) is the only hospital in the public sector providing round the clock surgical cover to children and presently is one of the largest and the only children hospital of the province of Sindh. NICH is a 500 bedded hospital and is providing tertiary care services for almost all types of pediatric diseases.
Keeping in view the need for further improvement at the children’s hospital, Mahvash and Jahangir Siddiqui Foundation decided to set up a Day Care Surgery Unit and Emergency Operation Theater at NICH. The project took Eight months for completion and is expected to greatly enhance the quality of child care services being offered at NICH.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mr. Jahangir Siddiqui, Mrs. Mahvash Siddiqui, Mr. Ali J Siddiqui, Mrs. Saira Siddiqui, Dr Jamal Raza of NICH, Mr. Iqbal Durrani, Secretary Health and many other notable dignitaries were present at this occasion. Mr. Ali J Siddiqui, CEO of Mahvash and Jahangir Siddiqui Foundation stated “We are pleased to have partnered with NICH for this initiative and we all need to encourage everyone to join hands to respond to the needs of this nation in a timely and effective manner. NICH is going from strength to strength and this gives us the drive and encouragement to further expand our support for such causes especially in the public sector”.
This support has resulted in numerous benefits being achieved for the patients and the hospital management such as freeing up space for 20 patients on a daily basis that are currently operated on in the main hospital and the patients will be admitted and discharged few hours after surgery when fully conscious and pain free. Due to the provision of the Day Care Surgery it is expected that almost 40% of the existing load (a figure of about 4,000) shall be transferred to this department. These freed beds thus can be used for patients who need in patient management which will ultimately shorten the waiting list. This will also reduce chances of cross and hospital acquired infections while ensuring additional expenses incurred during a hospital stay are eliminated.
This unit will benefit about 4,000 families as a direct effect and almost equal number will be indirect beneficiary because of bed availability. MJSF also supported the redesigning of the courtyard to provide a better quality recreational space for the children coming into the hospital and make their stay as comfortable as possible.
